Babies' brains are naturally designed to pick up new languages.

Did you know that babies (particularly those under 10 months) can easily absorb speech sounds in a range of languages? Babies can tell the difference between the sounds and rhythms of multiple languages in a way that adults cannot.
Only after long-term exposure to one specific language will babies lose the ability to make distinctions that are not part of their native tongue. So, the earlier babies are exposed to different languages, the easier it is to learn them.

Is your baby older than 10 months? Don't worry! Children soak up languages best between birth and 3 years old, so there is plenty of time to introduce a foreign language to your baby.

Hi! I'm Amy. I've always loved languages. I studied Spanish and French (and some Italian) at the University of Glasgow, before pursuing a Masters degree and then a PhD in French at the University of St Andrews. After I had my son in March 2024, I became fascinated with how babies learn language, both in English and in other languages. I started Bilingual Babbles with the mission of helping babies and their carers to make the most of the amazing ability that babies possess to learn several different languages at once from birth.
